Dermal fillers for scars

Dermal fillers are well known for their ability to add volume and youthful plumpness to our skin, but they are also an invaluable tool in improving the appearance of scars.

Dermal fillers can be an effective way of dealing with many indented scars, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Chicken pox scars
  • Scars from injuries
  • Scars from surgery (eg biopsies)
  • Depressed areas of the skin caused by burn scars

About dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are an aesthetic treatment whereby a gel is injected into the kin in order to add volume.

We use hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance which hydrates the skin and supports the production of collagen.

How dermal fillers improve scars

Volumising effect

While dermal fillers can’t completely eradicate your scars, they can dramatically improve the appearance, so they become virtually unnoticeable.

The dermal filler will be expertly injected into the site of the scar to push up the skin at the base of the scar, thereby making it more flush with the surface of your skin.

Hydration

The hyaluronic acid content in dermal fillers also has a hydrating effect, which helps to improve the overall tone and texture of the skin.

Longer term improvements

Over the longer term, dermal fillers can make a permanent improvement to the appearance of scars.

The filler injections help to break up scar tissue and the collagen-boosting properties of hyaluronic acid naturally repair the area.

While this will never get rid of the scar entirely, it can mean that over time less filler and less frequent treatments are required to maintain the improved appearance.

Areas which can be treated

Most of the patients who come to us for help with scarring want to primarily improve the appearance of facial scars.

However, dermal fillers are appropriate for use on any part of the body, so they can also be helpful in managing the appearance of bodily scarring. For example, chicken pox scars on the chest and décolletage, or acne scarring on the back.

IMMEDIATE RESULTS

One of the great things about dermal fillers is that you’ll see the results immediately after your treatment. And, aside from occasional, short-term redness or swelling at the point of injection, you’ll be able to go about your day as normal straight afterwards.

How long the effects will last depends on the type and location of scar being filled, but you should expect to benefit from the treatment for at least six months.

OTHER TREATMENTS

Laser treatments and chemical facial peels can both be used in conjunction with dermal fillers to maximise the improvement to your scarring.

Our expert medical practitioners will be able to recommend the best course of treatment to minimise the appearance of your scars, taking into account your skin type and the nature of the scarring.
