Tell us a bit about your life before becoming a nurse

When I was young I was a member of the British Gymnastics team. It was an amazing experience, though learning new moves on the beam or bars was always a bit scary! I competed in all the British team events, both individual and groups. Unfortunately, I had to give up while training for the Athens Olympics due to problems with my spine.

I decided I wanted to go into the field of aesthetics as a beauty therapist having watched my Mum’s friend doing beauty treatments. I trained at The Cambridge School Of Beauty Therapy in Sawston and achieved CIBTAC and CIDESCO diplomas in beauty therapy.

When did you decide to train as a nurse?

I started to train when I was 23. Through working in beauty I’d become interested in skin and facial aesthetics, and I wanted to gain experience and skills so I could carry out more complex treatments.

When I was injecting medication I was often told how gentle I was compared to the other trainee nurses – a skill I put down to my beauty training and my understanding of how delicate the skin is.

When you qualified you started working in Transplant Units and A&E. How did you find this?

Transplant was amazing, but emotionally draining. Seeing such familiar people pass away was horrible and it took its toll on me. I mainly worked with patients who had had kidney transplants (this is the most straightforward transplant to recover from). I also spent time in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) with patients who had had more complex transplants such as spleen, liver or bowel.

I really enjoyed working in A&E, particularly the patient contact. When I have time, I still try to do a shift now and then. The experience and rewards are completely different to aesthetic nursing, but equally rewarding in their own ways.

Which treatment do you particularly specialise in at Melior Clinics?

Dermal fillers – this is my favourite treatment because you can see the results straight away!

But any treatment can be very rewarding as it really depends on the patient.

If I can help someone who’s suffering from excessive underarm sweating then this can make a significant difference to their lives. Or you can improve a patient’s confidence if you enhance their beauty by reducing deep nasolabial folds or restoring lip volume.

Do you have a particularly memorable patient?

I’d have to say “myself”! My sweating was really bad and I wish I had known about botox years and years ago. It can be so debilitating. It’s a joy to have such a simple solution to my problem.

You have an exotic sounding surname – do you know where it originates from?

It’s Spanish. My grandmother was Spanish although she emigrated to the Philippines.

When you’re not busy treating patients, what do you do to relax?

I have a 3 ½ year old and two dogs, plus my own business outside of Melior Clinics, so there’s not that much time to relax! But, when I do get a moment to myself, I like to go to the gym.
