FAQ
BHRT for men
What is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT?)
BHRT involves using bio-identical hormones to restore and rebalance the body’s hormone levels during the transition to andropause and beyond.
Why do we need to replace hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream, impacting the function of every organ in our body. Hormone levels fluctuate constantly—moment to moment, minute to minute, day to day, and seasonally—and are influenced by major life events such as puberty, adulthood, and the andropause. Research indicates a natural decline in hormone levels as men age, leading to a decrease in energy, strength, and vitality. Additionally, lifestyle and stress can disrupt your hormone balance.
What is a bio-identical hormone?
A bio-identical hormone mimics the molecular and chemical structure of the hormones naturally produced in your body, including the specific arrangement of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms. They are 100% identical to your body’s natural hormones.
We create a customised blend of hormones. Depending on your individual requirements this might include DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), testosterone, melatonin, and pregnenolone. This precise match allows the hormones to fit perfectly into their receptor sites, ensuring that their messages are accurately translated and their effects align closely with your body’s normal biochemistry.
Consequently, by personalising the treatment, we can achieve optimal results while minimising side effects.
Where do bio-identical hormones come from?
The hormones we use are extracted from plants and processed into powder form, which can then be administered orally as a lozenge or through transdermal cream applications.
HRT vs BHRT
BHRT differs from conventional HRT by utilising bio-identical hormones to restore and balance your body’s hormones. These bio-identical hormones have the same molecular and chemical structure as your natural hormones, including the arrangement of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms. This method provides a natural, safe, and effective way to supplement hormone levels and alleviate symptoms of the andropause without the side effects often associated with conventional HRT.
Conventional HRT typically uses synthetic hormones in a “one size fits all” approach, which does not replicate your body’s natural hormones and therefore increases the risk of side effects. In contrast, BHRT offers customised medication, and because bio-identical hormones closely match the body’s natural hormones, side effects are rare. BHRT is available for both women and men who experience hormone imbalances due to ageing, helping to restore and maintain optimal health and hormone balance.
How does BHRT for men differ from BHRT for women?
Hormones are essential for regulating every function in our bodies. The andropause (male menopause) brings about various symptoms due to declining testosterone levels, such as depression, reduced muscle mass and strength, increased body fat, and erectile dysfunction.
BHRT for men can alleviate these symptoms by rebalancing hormone levels. In many aspects the treatment is the same as that given to women, since it is customised to each patient’s specific hormonal needs, regardless of gender.
How does the BHRT consultation work?
We know that each individual is different, deserving a holistic and bespoke approach to achieve the best outcome. Your consultation will be fully tailored to your needs and the resulting prescription will be bespoke to your bio-chemistry.
For convenience, your consultations will take place online with our expert practitioner. All your prescriptions will be delivered to you and we can also arrange to carry out blood tests at your home or in your local clinic, whichever you prefer.
At the initial consultation we will take a detailed medical history, discuss your symptoms, carry out a BMI check and arrange your blood tests. If required, we may also refer you for scans, for example a prostate scan.
This consultation will ascertain whether you are a viable candidate for BHRT and if it is appropriate for you to proceed.
Your practitioner will also provide you with helpful lifestyle advice, to ensure you are meeting the challenges of the menopause from every angle.
Upon receipt of the blood test results and any other diagnostic test results, our specialist practitioner will contact you by email to provide your treatment plan and answer any questions. Your practitioner will write a tailor-made prescription for BHRT hormones and the medication will be posted to you.
Your first follow-up online consultation will be used to assess your progress with the prescribed medicines, evaluate the improvement in your symptoms and, if required, make changes to medication dosages. These consultations will continue bi-annually, and you can email your practitioner if you have any questions between appointments.
Your medication is provided via repeat prescriptions which are valid for 12 months.
What are the risks and side effects of BHRT?
Bio-identical hormones are not only better tolerated but can also be individually adjusted to meet your specific needs. Thanks to the ability to make personalised dosage tweaks as necessary, side effects are rare.
How do I know if I’m andropausal?
A simple blood test will measure your hormones and physiological functions, including your levels of testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) and LH (luteinizing hormones). We may test for additional markers, depending on your individual situation and the symptoms you are experiencing. The results will identify any fluctuations which may be indicative of the andropause.
Do I have to be on BHRT for life?
No, throughout the process it will be entirely up to you whether to remain on treatment or finish. Your practitioner will advise you on whether they feel continued treatment will be beneficial to you.
If you are still feeling healthier and happier while taking the treatment then you can simply continue.
How quickly will the treatment begin to work?
You might experience some benefits immediately, but on the whole the best results will start about three to six weeks after your initial treatment. However, if you have a severe hormonal imbalance then it may take up to four months for the full benefits to emerge.
Can BHRT slow the ageing process?
Yes, BHRT is effective at slowing the ageing process, helping you maintain good skin condition, cognition, memory, energy and sexual function for longer.
Restoring your hormonal balance may also protect you against chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
I’m already on HRT. Can I change to BHRT?
Yes, absolutely. You’ll go through the usual consultation process including blood tests and your BHRT medication will be prescribed on the basis of those results, taking into account your current HRT medication.
