Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive production of sweat when the body doesn’t need to be cooled down because of heat or exercise.

This condition can be both embarrassing and uncomfortable. It occurs in various parts of the body, including the head, underarms, feet, hands and groin.

At Melior Clinics, we offer treatments for hyperhidrosis that use botox, which can provide a safe and effective way to manage the condition. Treatment usually takes only a few minutes to administer, with results that can last for months.

What is botox for hyperhidrosis treatment like?

Following your consultation, treatment can usually be carried out immediately and typically takes no longer than 30 minutes.

Botox is injected in small doses just beneath the skin in a precise grid pattern over the affected area. To help minimise discomfort, ice is applied to the skin beforehand rather than using anaesthetic.

Most people begin to notice a significant reduction in excessive sweating within 48 hours, with full effects developing over the following days.

Hyperhidrosis – your questions answered

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that occurs even when the body doesn’t need to cool down from heat or exercise.

It can affect areas such as the head, underarms, hands, feet, and groin.

What causes hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis often has no obvious cause. It is believed to be the result of an issue with the part of the nervous system that controls sweating. This type is known as primary hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis that has an identifiable cause is called secondary hyperhidrosis. Causes can include stress, heat, hormones, or family genetics.

More information from Hyperhidrosis UK.

How does botox treat hyperhidrosis?

Botox can be used to disable the eccrine and apocrine glands and prevent them from producing and secreting sweat from the body.

Small doses of botox are injected in a grid-pattern to the affected area, which blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the sweat glands, preventing the glands from producing sweat.

What are the benefits of botox for hyperhidrosis?

Botox is a non-invasive treatment that can be administered in minutes, with the effects lasting for several months.

The treatment immediately reduces sweating to alleviate embarrassment and restore confidence.

Does botox cure hyperhidrosis?

Although botox does not provide a cure for hyperhidrosis, it can help you effectively manage the condition in your daily life. Sweating does not need to be the main focus of your day.

Treatment can help eliminate embarrassment, giving you the confidence to wear the clothes you want to, exercise without concern, go on holiday to hotter climates, or simply hold the hand of loved ones without worrying about sweating.

What is the science behind botox for hyperhidrosis?

Botox can be used to disable the eccrine and apocrine glands and prevent them from producing and secreting sweat from the body. Small doses of botox are injected in a grid-pattern to the affected area, which blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the sweat glands, preventing the glands from producing sweat.

Research into hyperhidrosis treatment with botox:

Research has proven botox to be highly effective in managing the symptoms of hyperhidrosis. For example, a study showed that the use of botox for hyperhidrosis meant that the proportion of patients who had to change their clothes two or more times a day, fell from 76.9% pre-treatment to 6.6% eight weeks after treatment (further reading about this study).

In fact, the four stage Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) which is widely used to assess the impact of excessive sweating, was developed by botox manufacturer Allergan.
