Which skin peel should I choose?

Skin peels are designed to accelerate the removal of old, dead skin cells at the surface of the skin to promote new cell growth and accelerate rejuvenation. They offer a revolutionary way to effectively treat ageing skin, acne and other blemishes, reduce sun damage and hyper-pigmentation. The procedure can also help the skin to appear smoother, healthier, plumper and tighter.

A variety of in-clinic peels are available, specified by harshness, depth and recuperation times. Preferences for peels are often determined as much by lifestyle (can you afford to take two weeks downtime out of your busy schedule to recuperate or do you want no requisite downtime?) than the specific skin issues looking to be resolved.

A highly effective chemical peel treatment is the Obagi Blue Peel, a one-off treatment which contains a low concentration of trichlororoacetic acid (TCA) mixed with a special blue base.  The Obagi Blue Peel allows regulation of the depth of the peel and removal of surface layers of aged and damaged skin. These dead cells are replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skin’s own clarity and tightness to resurface. Blue Peel healing is relatively painless and occurs within 10-14 days although the skin will remain deep blue for approximately 36 hours. The procedure must be performed by practitioners with specialist training and experience.

The much gentler glycolic peels, including the Jan Marini peels, are derived from sugar cane, stimulating healthy new skin growth by sloughing off (munching) the surface dead skin cells to make the skin natural-looking, smooth, and bright. Glycolic acid skincare products can be used to treat acne scarring, ageing and sun damaged skin. During the procedure, the skin is cleansed with a pre-peel solution and then the transparent glycolic peel is painted onto the skin, like a mask. It is left on for one minute and then cleansed off. There is no downtime required and patients can revert to their normal routines immediately after treatment. Generally a series of six skin treatments administered weekly is recommended, however single skin treatments regularly can also achieve excellent results.

All peels should be performed by appropriately qualified skin care practitioners.  They require the use of specified homecare products – including the Obagi NuDerm system and Jan Marini Skin Care Management System – to help prepare the skin and ensure that it is in optimum condition prior to the peel, which will also help reduce healing times.
