Fordyce spots explained

Fordyce spots are a natural and harmless part of the anatomy.

They are whitish-yellow bumps that can be commonly present on the edge of the lips (also called the vermillion border) or inside the cheeks. Less often, Fordyce spots can be present under the eyes or in intimate areas of the body.

Here we explain what Fordyce spots are and why they can become more visible after treatment with lip fillers.

What are Fordyce spots?

Fordyce spots, also referred to as Fordyce granules or glands, are enlarged oil glands.

Oil or sebaceous glands are usually attached to hair follicles; however, Fordyce spots appear on skin where no hair is present. They usually develop as solitary or scattered bumps, but sometimes they can appear in clusters.

Fordyce spots are a natural part of the body that are present at birth. They aren’t usually noticeable until puberty, when hormonal changes that affect the sebaceous glands can enlarge them.

Fordyce spots and lip fillers

Lip fillers are used to enhance the natural shape of the lips, and they are a highly effective way to counter the fine lines associated with the natural ageing process and smoking.

Because lip fillers gently plump out the lips to give them a fuller appearance, if Fordyce spots are present, they can become more visible.

Even though they have always been present, the new, fuller lip shape may make the Fordyce spots more apparent.
